By the Bushel Community Food Co-operative is now Peterborough’s premier sustainably harvested, 100% local food source. Memberships Available! We are pleased to announce that the new Community Food Co-operative will begin serving its members with the first weekly basket pick-up day of the summer on Thursday, June 11th, 2009.The By the Bushel Community Food Co-op is a stakeholder Co-op with three categories of shares (consumer, producer, and employee.) Owning a share means owning a piece of the Co-op! It also means that you have access to all the co-op's services and events. As a consumer you can buy local food from the co-op and as a producer, you can sell that food to the co-op. Employee members have the satisfaction of putting their labour towards a business of which they are part-owners. All members have a vote and are represented on the Co-op Board of Governors. When the co-op produces a surplus, its members decide whether to distribute it in dividends amongst them, or re-invest in their shared enterprise.The BtB Co-op is based on its vision for a just, participatory and sustainable economic base for our local food system. We coordinate local producers to offer a combination of certified organic and ecologically-responsible products, primarily produce, to local consumers. Operating as a producer/employee/ consumer for-profit share co-operative, the BTB Co-op offers a weekly basket of fresh produce from mid-June through October; a monthly basket of winter storage produce November through May; and a variety of other local and sustainably produced or raised items, including honey, frozen meat and poultry, bulk vegetables for canning and more, all locally sourced.
