Food, Food and More Food!

1st Annual City-Wide Food Drive a Great Success!

Kawartha Food Share thanks the people of Peterborough for their generosity during the July 19th City-Wide Food Drive. Over 13 tons of food was donated in the one day event.
“People donated the food we needed” said Dave Ralph, Chair of Kawartha Food Share. He continued to say; “The food we received will help us through the summer and into the fall so we can assist those people who are hungry in our community.”

Over 180 volunteers travelled down every street in the City picking up the bags of donated food people left on their front step. Special thanks go to the volunteers, supporters and sponsors of the event. The sponsorship of Peterborough This Week, The Wolf/980 KRUZ, Lansdowne Place, East Peterborough Lions Club and Dominos Pizza were big factors contributing to the success of the event.
It is staggering that local food banks need so much food. Over 6,300 people use food banks every month in the City and County of Peterborough. 2,500 or 40% of these food bank users are youth and children. Kawartha Food Share ran the City-Wide Food Drive in the summer because this is the time when donations are at their lowest. 75,000 items are food is distributed every month by Kawartha Food Share to support local food banks.

“Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.”
