The Truth About Pork

Announcing a new Meetup for Peterborough Cooking and Wine Club Group!
What: The Truth About Pork
When: January 29, 2010 7:00 PM
Price: CAD20.00 per person
Where:Stewart Hall Library1490 Matchette Line Off Wallace Point RoadPeterborough, ON K9J 6Y3

We continue our culinary educational series ...
You've discovered the world of Italian olive oil. Now you're about to learn the truth about Ontario pork.

Join us for an evening of myth busting and food sampling with the owners of an Ontario farm and company called The Whole Pig.

Pork is nutritious and lean. With 13 key nutrients, pork is an excellent protein source for the whole family. The most popular cuts of pork (pork tenderloin, pork chops, pork steaks, pork roasts) are low in fat. Certain cuts, like ribs and bacon, have more fat, but add flavour and interest to a special occasion.

Did you know, for example, that Ontario pork is naturally trans-fat free?
The Whole Pig is a concept of understanding pork and how a whole pig will fit into your lifestyle weather it is low fat, gluten free, fast or slow cooking or if you are just looking for a product with variety. (Crown Roast for that Special occasion, Pork nuggets for the kids party or chops for the BBQ)

Owners Martin and Teresa have been pork producers for 27 years and welcome this opportunity to have you taste quality pork, to answer your questions about how pork is produced on their farm, to learn about nutritional information, recipes and products they are offering.

Come out for an evening of fun and take home your own frozen pork to enjoy at home.
Date: Friday, January 29, 2010Time: 7:00 p.m.Place: Stewart Hall Library in Stewart Hall, off Wallace Point Road at Matchette LineCost: $20.00

A Follow Up on Reggie's Chip Truck

A new posting at Chowhound.com netted this nugget:

"Good news, Reggie's fans. Reggie and Cam have opened a permanent location in addition to their seasonal chip truck by Trent. Their restaurant is open daily at 89 Hunter Street East in East City, Peterborough. Same delicious homemade burgers and fries as well as breakfast. At lunchtime I step out the front door of my neighboring business just to catch a whiff of the grill!"
Well, it's time to take a drive to East City... And stop in at FireHouse Gourmet while you're down there...

All Hail the Chip Truck?

I read this on Chowhound.com the other day: "When all is said and done however, if I make a trip up to P'boro for a day and have time for only one meal, there is no question where I would go: Reggie's! This is a chip truck with aspirations and is already legendary among those in the know.. It is just past the entrance to Trent University off Water St. Reggie and his staff produce a burger that is little short of greatness. 100% fresh beef on a good bun with your choice of condiments. Sweet potato fries to die for (have the cajun dip). Poutine that is as close to Quebec standard as you are going to find, with fresh, squeaky curds. My favourite burger is the Drop Out burger, which is made with a slice of peameal. Reggie's is no longer just a little cart.. Since Reggie took over the spot from the previous guy (who was found dead in his chip truck...yummo!), he has been so successful that he had a new, large prefab trailer installed. In summer, there can be huge line-ups, but it is worth the wait. To me, this is a destination burger, if there is such a thing. Grab a meal and sit at the picnic tables by the river. Pretty close to heaven, actually." (thank you MunchieHK)
Is it true? I don't know. We haven't tried it out... But it certainly was a rousing endorsement!

“Big City” Chefs take their skills to Lakefield, ON with the opening of RIVERHOUSE CO. Restaurant

When Toronto-based “foodie” couple Jeff Kirker & Karrie Galvin make a change – they go all the way. A few years ago, chef/food stylist Galvin & sommelier/businessman Kirker sold their downtown Toronto home and relocated to Lakefield, Ontario to fulfill their lifelong dream & return to Chef Galvin’s roots (she was raised 10 minutes away in Bridgenorth, ON).

The couple purchased a rambling, three-storey house from the early 1900’s to restore (with their own two hands!) and turn into their home and restaurant. With original wood flooring & stained glass restored to its former glory, the couple has been enjoying life as restaurant owners since this past June.

Riverhouse Co. includes local, seasonal & sustainable organic foods with a menu that changes with the seasonal harvest. The restaurant is fully licensed to serve local brews of tap as well as a varied wine list available by glass or bottle. With 28 seats inside & 35 seats outside, the establishment has begun with the serving of lunch and dinner and will grow its hours from there.

With work in such Canadian culinary institutions as Toronto’s Canoe & Banff’s Buffalo Mountain Lodge between them and Ms. Galvin’s established career as on-camera Chef (on Food Network Canada’s Road Grill) and the hundreds of television food series she has worked on as food stylist, Riverhouse Co. promises to provide delicious cuisine for locals, tourists & city-folk alike. Riverhouse Co. is located at: 36 Bridge St.Lakefield, ONK0L 2H0

French Food Tax

Good Grief! This is quoted from the UK Times Online: "Gallic gastronomic icons such as brie, foie gras, pastries as well as dozens of other extra fatty delicacies could be subject to a 14.1% increase in taxes as part of a bid by the French government to keep its nation fit and healthy."
Are these people TRYING to kill me? This all stems from a rise in childhood obesity in France. Get real: Kids are getting fatter because, like everywhere else, they have adapted to a feeding culture that boasts HUGE plates, massive amounts of saturated fat but that leaves them hungry in an hour. Can anyone say Golden Arches? The fast food epidemic is just as prevalent in Europe as it is in North America, amongst the younger set. The older set? Not so much.
My great-grandmother lived to 105 - she ate cheese, foie gras, croissants, snails, all sorts of things that would now be taxed to death in a typically paternalistic effort to extend her life. Thank goodness she isn't here to see this.

Food, Food and More Food!

1st Annual City-Wide Food Drive a Great Success!

Kawartha Food Share thanks the people of Peterborough for their generosity during the July 19th City-Wide Food Drive. Over 13 tons of food was donated in the one day event.
“People donated the food we needed” said Dave Ralph, Chair of Kawartha Food Share. He continued to say; “The food we received will help us through the summer and into the fall so we can assist those people who are hungry in our community.”

Over 180 volunteers travelled down every street in the City picking up the bags of donated food people left on their front step. Special thanks go to the volunteers, supporters and sponsors of the event. The sponsorship of Peterborough This Week, The Wolf/980 KRUZ, Lansdowne Place, East Peterborough Lions Club and Dominos Pizza were big factors contributing to the success of the event.
It is staggering that local food banks need so much food. Over 6,300 people use food banks every month in the City and County of Peterborough. 2,500 or 40% of these food bank users are youth and children. Kawartha Food Share ran the City-Wide Food Drive in the summer because this is the time when donations are at their lowest. 75,000 items are food is distributed every month by Kawartha Food Share to support local food banks.

“Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.”
